MarketWatch Max & WebMemo — User Manual

Two companions to MarketWatch: a bigger portfolio view on the watch, and a workspace on the web. What each one does, and how they connect.

1. Getting Started

MarketWatch is the paid Garmin app: up to 3 portfolios of 20 symbols each, live prices, charts, alerts and a watch-face home. Two companions come with it at no extra cost.

  • MarketWatch Max — a second Garmin app for bigger portfolios: up to 7 portfolios of 20 symbols each, a portfolio overview home and a Markets list. It unlocks with your MarketWatch license key.
  • WebMemo — a web page (app.easymoat.com/webmemo/) where you build and analyze portfolios on a big screen: holdings, trades, allocation, dividends and analysis. You sign in with your MarketWatch Device ID and the 6-digit Web code shown on the watch (older MarketWatch versions use the license key instead). It works from the first day of a new MarketWatch trial.

One purchase covers all three. Nothing is charged for Max or WebMemo, and there is no subscription.

2. MarketWatch Max

Max shows the same market data as MarketWatch, with the same detail screens and the same controls. This chapter covers what is different. For charts, technical overlays, the position memo, the Net detail and alerts, use the MarketWatch manual.

Unlocking Max

  1. Install MarketWatch Max from the Connect IQ Store. On its own it shows a License Required screen.
  2. In the Connect IQ app on your phone, open the settings of MarketWatch Max and enter your MarketWatch license key in License Key. After a purchase it is the key from the confirmation email. During a new MarketWatch trial it is shown on the watch: open the Device ID screen of MarketWatch and copy the two lines under Key for MarketWatch Max.
  3. If your MarketWatch is registered (it runs the current version), approve the link in WebMemo: open the account screen, choose Connect MarketWatch Max, enter the Device ID shown in Max, then open Max within 24 hours. On an older MarketWatch, just open Max. It is now linked to your MarketWatch and uses the same account, so the portfolios you choose in WebMemo appear here.
MarketWatch must be purchased or in a new 14-day trial. One Max can be linked per key; a second watch with the same key will not unlock. If you move to a new watch, email easymoat@gmail.com and we move the link for you. Once linked, Max keeps working without entering the key again.

What Max adds

  • Up to 7 portfolios — each with up to 20 symbols, 140 in all. Which portfolios are on the watch is chosen in WebMemo (chapter 4). MarketWatch carries up to 3.
  • Portfolio overview home — Max opens on a list of your portfolios with each one's aggregate P&L. Scroll to a portfolio and open it to see its symbols.
  • Markets — a read-only list of up to 20 indices and FX rates, chosen in WebMemo (the symbols you mark for sync there, with the names you gave them) and brought over with Markets Down (chapter 4). Each has its own detail screen. Prices refresh while it is open, and Refresh in the portfolio list updates it too.
  • Price move alerts — symbols that reach the ±% you set in Markets on the web are highlighted, and the Markets row in the menu blinks yellow while one is alerting.
  • Net detail per portfolio — the day's move, the aggregate P&L chart with its break-even line, and the Contribution screen that splits today's move by symbol, exactly as in MarketWatch.

The detail screen

Same as MarketWatch: chart with Per: (window) and TF: (bar size), high/low, S:/E:, Vol:, volume bars, technical overlays and the position memo. Prices are shown with the decimals of their currency (yen and won as whole numbers, dollars to two decimals).

In the Net detail: START cycles the period, a tap on the clock refreshes every symbol, a tap on the chart opens Contribution, and BACK returns.

3. WebMemo

WebMemo runs in any browser at app.easymoat.com/webmemo/, on a computer, a tablet or a phone in landscape. There is no account to create: your MarketWatch Device ID is the account.

Signing in

  • Device ID and key — enter the Device ID shown in MarketWatch and the 6-digit Web code: on the watch, open Device ID in the settings menu, then Web code. The code is valid for 10 minutes and works once. You stay signed in for 30 days on that browser (during a trial, until the trial ends). The first time after the watch registers, the page tells you the date it was registered; if that was not you, contact us. Sign out web on the watch ends every browser's sign-in. A watch on an older MarketWatch signs in with the license key instead.
  • Demo — open app.easymoat.com/webmemo/?demo=1 to try every screen on sample data without signing in.

Portfolios and holdings

  • Up to 20 portfolios — each with up to 20 symbols and its own cash. Organize by account, strategy or theme.
  • Memo tabs — every symbol has a Memo tab (cost basis, quantity, alert prices), a Trades tab, and any tabs you add for your own notes.
  • Trades tab — record buys and sells and the holdings, average cost and cash update themselves.
  • Charts — pick a period and the bar size is shown with it, for example 1D · 5-minute bars, the same periods as on the watch.
  • Daily change — Daily change compares with the previous trading day's close taken from daily price data (Yahoo's own 'previous close' can lag by a day for some non-US markets).
  • Earnings dates — when a company reports within 7 days, its tile shows a small orange badge such as Earnings 10/17 (Earnings today on the day). The symbol's detail shows Next earnings 11/02 (18d) under the name, in orange within 7 days; a date that is not yet confirmed is marked (tentative). If the next date has not been announced, it shows the last one, such as Last earnings 8/17 (next not announced). Funds, ETFs, indices, currencies and crypto have no earnings date. Dates come from each company's announced schedule and can change.

Planning and analysis

  • Allocation and rebalance — set a target across asset classes and see how far your holdings have drifted from it. A calculator for your own plan, not advice.
  • Dividends — trailing-12-month income per symbol and for the whole portfolio.
  • Analysis — a correlation matrix, a correlation ranking, benchmark comparison and index sensitivity (beta), all against a catalog of 38 market benchmarks grouped by region: Japan (3), the US (4), Europe (10, including STOXX Europe 600, IBEX 35, FTSE MIB, AEX, SMI and OMX Stockholm 30), Asia-Pacific (13, including Hang Seng China Enterprises, SZSE Component, KOSDAQ, Nifty 50, STI, Jakarta Composite and KLCI), FX and rates (4) and others (4). The ranking's base benchmark can be any of them, listed by region.
  • Economic calendar — market-moving releases grouped by day, with importance, consensus, previous and actual values. Dates and times follow your browser's local time. Past days fold into a single line with the number of releases; tap it to open or close. Each release name links to its page on FXStreet (opens in a new tab) with its history and an explanation. Speeches by central bank officials, such as ECB's President Lagarde speech, link instead to that central bank's own list of speeches and events (ECB, Fed, BoE, Bank of Japan, BoC, RBA, RBNZ and SNB). It is a list, not the speech itself, so look for the date. Other speeches have no link.
  • Market News — about 30 recent headlines about global markets, newest first, always in English whatever language the page is in. Each shows the headline, the source and how long ago it was published; tap it to read the article on the publisher's site (opens in a new tab). Only investing headlines, and only from sources that are free to read: CNBC, Yahoo Finance, Investing.com, Fox Business and the Guardian. The list updates about every 10 minutes.
  • CSV — export and import your data, to back it up or move it between browsers.
Your data is kept under your Device ID only. Delete all my data at the bottom of the page removes everything at once. See the privacy policy for details.

4. Working Together

WebMemo is where you decide what each watch shows. The watches then pull it in, and what you edit on a watch can go back to WebMemo.

Choosing what goes to each watch

  • MWM chip — each portfolio in WebMemo has an MWM chip. Turn it on for up to 7 portfolios and those are the ones MarketWatch Max shows.
  • MW chip — the same for MarketWatch, for up to 3 portfolios.
  • Markets — in the Markets view, mark up to 20 indices and FX rates for sync. They become the Markets list in Max, with the names and ±% alerts you set, the next time you run Markets Down on the watch.

Two-way sync

Both directions are started from the watch, so you decide when each side is updated. In Max, open Menu at the bottom of the portfolio list, then Sync: WebMemo Down brings the portfolios you chose on the web to the watch, WebMemo Up sends the watch's current portfolios and memos to the web, and Markets Down brings the Markets list. In MarketWatch the same two items are called WebMemo Load and WebMemo Save. Cost basis, quantity and alert prices you edit on the watch reach WebMemo with the next Up, and edits made on the web reach the watch with the next Down. Nothing syncs on its own.

MarketWatch and Max are linked through the same license key, so they share one account: the portfolios and memos you see in WebMemo are the ones behind both watches.

5. Troubleshooting

Max shows License Required

Enter your MarketWatch license key under License Key in the Connect IQ settings of Max. If it is already there, check that MarketWatch is purchased or in a new trial, and that no other watch is linked with the same key.

I changed my watch and Max will not unlock

One Max is linked per key. Email easymoat@gmail.com with your new Device ID and we move the link.

WebMemo will not sign me in

Use the Device ID shown in MarketWatch (not the one from another Easymoat app) with the Web code from the watch; a registered watch cannot sign in with the key any more, and the page points you to the Web code. Each code works once and for 10 minutes, so open Web code again for a fresh one. If the page says the watch is registered elsewhere, another watch uses this ID: contact us. Reinstalling MarketWatch on the same watch, or deleting all your WebMemo data, simply registers the watch again the next time you open MarketWatch. When a trial ends without a purchase, WebMemo and Max stop too.

The numbers on the watch and the web differ

Nothing syncs on its own: run WebMemo Down or WebMemo Up (Max) or WebMemo Load or WebMemo Save (MarketWatch) on the watch when you want the two sides to match. Totals also differ by design in mixed-currency portfolios: the watch adds raw values without converting currencies, while WebMemo converts foreign holdings to yen.
